A Raleigh startup backed by Bill Gates has made an acquisition to bolster its goal of disrupting the home construction industry. Vantem, which manufactures net-zero modular homes and counts Gates’ Breakthrough Energy Ventures as an investor, has bought Arris Manufacturing, an off-site multifamily residential manufacturer as part of its strategy to establish 20 plants in the U.S.
Vantem has about 450 employees, including about 10 in North Carolina. It aims to reduce costs through factory-built homes using modular construction technology, said CEO and founder Chris Anderson.
